What is difference between Mindfulness and Vipassana meditation

Post by No_Mind »

I have downloaded an app created by US Department of Veteran Affairs which teaches mindfulness.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... l=en&gl=US

The instructions are very similar to what I have found in vipassana books and YT videos.

What is the difference?

Vipassana is grounded in Right View and it isn't just used to make uncomfortable feelings go away.

Vipassana in the suttas means seeing the drawbacks, not mindfulness. Sati (Remember) + upatthana (to keep attention within). "pari mukham satim upatthapetva" means, “The attention that is normally focused externally, towards the surroundings, is turned inwards.”

Satipatthana is not vipassana, but leads to samatha and vipassana. Vipassana is when you turn your attention towards the drawbacks, particularly the drawbacks of the 5 aggregates, such as that they are impermanent, suffering and not-self, which results in dispassion, disenchantment, and letting go.

Furthermore, AN 9.41 shows that Vipassana leads to attaining jhanas and vipassana leads to attaining deeper jhanas by seeing the drawbacks of the current jhana one is in, so it is Vipassana that makes someone progress and turn away from the 5 aggregates which is the act of attaining jhanas.

Mindfulness is one of the key components leading to Vipassana/insight.
