Kasiṇas and the Cūḷasuññata sutta

Post by Ceisiwr »

I've put together a table regarding how I think the 8 liberations, bases for mastery and Kasiṇas could relate to the meditation practice outlined in the Cūḷasuññata sutta.

understanding it has the nature of a mirage,

Do you have experience with any of the states in this chart?
"Therein monks, that Dimension should be known wherein the eye ceases and the perception of forms fades away...the ear... the nose...the tongue... the body ceases and the perception of touch fades away...

That Dimension should be known wherein mentality ceases and the perception of mind-objects fades away.
That Dimension should be known; that Dimension should be known."

Some limited experience.

It appears you completely misunderstood the Culasunnata Sutta. It is not about the Kasina. It is about the Vipassana meditaion. You completely ignored the most important last paragraph.
They understand: ‘But whatever is produced by choices and intentions is impermanent and liable to cessation.’
‘Yaṁ kho pana kiñci abhisaṅkhataṁ abhisañcetayitaṁ tadaniccaṁ nirodhadhamman’ti pajānāti.
Knowing and seeing like this, their mind is freed from the defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.
Tassa evaṁ jānato evaṁ passato kāmāsavāpi cittaṁ vimuccati, bhavāsavāpi cittaṁ vimuccati, avijjāsavāpi cittaṁ vimuccati.
When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.

The oneness dependent on earth is very likely to be the earth kasiṇa IMO. The commentaries also take this view. Unlike the Visuddhimagga but in agreement with the Vimuttimagga I view infinite space and infinite consciousness as being kasiṇas.
