Re: Uposatha Observance Club
Happy uposatha!
The Bak Poya day is the full-moon of April. This holy day celebrates that the Buddha
visits Ceylon for the second time to reconcile two local nāga chiefs Mahodara and Cūlodara,
uncle and nephew, who had fallen into war threatening hostility about a jewel-beset throne...
The story shows the Buddha as fine diplomat and is given in full below!
On such Full-Moon Uposatha Poya Observance days:
Any Lay Buddhist simply joins the Three Refuges and undertakes the Five Precepts like this:
Newly bathed, white-clothed, clean bare feet, one kneels at a shrine with a Buddha-statue,
and bows first 3 times, so that feet, hands, elbows, knees and head touch the floor.
To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, and to cleanse one's mind — this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

Re: Uposatha Observance Club
Happy New Moon Uposatha (May 4th 2019)!
Rain soddens what's covered
& doesn't sodden what's open.
So open up what's covered up,
so that it won't get soddened by the rain.[2]
To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, and to cleanse one's mind — this is the teaching of the Buddhas.
I have a choice next month to
Is personal travel still "seeking entertainment" even if you're returning home from said entertainment? If you do travel on an uposatha, do you undertake the precept not to eat outside the proper hours?
Thank you so much in advance for your time.
- Travel on a day which might be difficult for me physically, possibly pushing the safety envelope, in order to be home on the full moon uposatha.
- Make an all-day drive on the uposatha itself, because it is the day my host asked me to stay through (depart upon)
- Ask my host for an extra day (which she's already said I could do), and observe sila in a non-Buddhist home (awkward, but possibly doable)

Full Moon

Then the Gracious One addressed the monks, saying:
“Come now, monks, for I tell you all conditioned things are subject to decay, strive on with heedfulness! Not long now there will be the Realised One’s Final Emancipation, after the passing of three months the Realised One will attain Final Emancipation.”
The Gracious One said this, and after saying this, the Fortunate One, the Teacher, said something more:
“Youths and also the old, fools and also the wise,
Rich and also the poor—all end in death.
Like an earthen vessel made by a potter,
Small and great, that which is baked and unbaked,
All end in breakage, just so life ends in death.”
Then the Teacher, said something more:
“Well-matured, decayed, with little of my life remaining,
Having abandoned rebirth I will go, having made myself a refuge.
Be heedful, mindful, and virtuous, monks,
With well-reasoned thoughts, protect your minds.
Whoever in this Teaching and Discipline will live heedful,
Having given up the round of rebirths, he will put an end to suffering.”
