Degrees of seperation for Wrong Livelihood

Post by TRobinson465 »

Hello all,

Does anyone have any suttas, commentaries, or even teachings from esteemed Buddhist teachers on where the buck stops when it comes to wrong livelihood?

There are obviously clear violations but what about the grey areas/being indirectly linked to a wrong livelihood. For instance if you work at Boeing and make passenger planes you are fine, but since Boeing also makes weapons, is working there in any kind of support role bad? Would being in a management position, an investor, or even an accountant at Boeing be wrong livelihood since one of the things they do is make weapons?

Theres also other grey areas. like what if you work for/invest in a company that makes plane engines. Would it be wrong livelihood since some of those engines would go to the military to make fighter jets? What about working in a steel mill where most of it goes to consumer goods but some of the steel is still sold to gun makers to make bullets or guns? Or even a land developer who leases out property space to a liquor store or restaurant that sells alcohol? Where does the buck stop?

Since Theravada Buddhism generally agrees you get no bad karma from buying meat at the store, despite the fact that you know the animal was basically murdered to feed you, i assume there is some degree of separation where it it safe to work for or invest in companies that have some tangental link to an industry that is wrong livelihood.
