Devadatta, the Buddha's cousin, had jhana and lost it because his mind was going wild and obsessed.

Yes, it is possible to lose jhana.
Becoming a meditator means learning to recognize the conditions for jhana and practicing accordingly.
Guarding the senses, moderation in eating, dedication to wakefulness, practicing right and endearing speech, following 5 or 8 precepts, learning suttas; these are all conditions for jhana as are others and they can be lost if we start getting into unskillful activities.
There is no jhana for one with no discernment.
No discernment for one with no jhana.
