Vipassana

How are the four contemplations of Vipassana along with anapana are practiced.Are the breath, body, sensations, mind and mind phenomena observed simultaneously or one at a time or in combinations during meditation session and while doing day to day work.

Hello.

The four contemplations of Satipatthana are the body, sensations, mind and mind objects.

"Vipassana" means "special seeing" or "insight", which means to see the breath/body, sensations, mind and mind objects are impermanent, unsatisfactory, not-self and when defiled by craving & attachment cause suffering.

Generally, each Satipatthana is observed separately; however, as described in the Anapanasati Sutta, each Satipatthana can be observed together with observing the breath. For example, when feelings are observed, it is possible to simultaneously observe the breathing with the feelings.

Hey kantilal,

One comment I have is, sure the breath can be recognized as a feeling. But in Buddhist psychology the mind can only focus on one thing at a time. So in consideration of that, definitely the four foundations of mindfulness are contemplated separately. My friend please consider Joseph Goldstein's book "mindfulness" to learn how to practice the four foundations of mindfulness. And when you are done with that book, read the writings of the monks of Theravada Buddhism. Much is found free online. Keep meditating. Oh and for anapanasati please read Bhikkhu Buddhadasa called Ananapanasati.
