Buddha's first teacher was Channa?

Post by SarathW »

Buddha's first teacher was Channa (his coachman)?

Ven. Pitigal Gunarathana said that Buddha's first teacher was Channa.
He was referring to four messengers (old man, sick man. dead man and a monk)

he didn't purposely take buddha to make him buddha , on the other hand buddha went on his own wish and channa has to obey or he face consequence from king

Nobody taught Buddha to be a "Buddha".
Hiriottappasampannā,
sukkadhammasamāhitā;
Santo sappurisā loke,
devadhammāti vuccare.

Hi:

Sure, in some sense it was the old man, in others his mother/father, in others his first spiritual teacher, his first rebirth, the previous buddha, etc.

We have to be careful with ideas like that... before you know it we'll all be 'Interbeing'... and then it's a hop, skip & a jump to referring to Stalin et al as our 'teachers' :quote:

For the majority of us, the first teacher(s) were our parents - an old man, a sick man. a dead man. And theirs were their parents.
And what is right speech? Abstaining from lying, from divisive speech, from abusive speech, & from idle chatter: This is called right speech.

Agreed. It depends on what you learn from your teacher.
We all learned toilet training from our parents.
Basically, every person you meet is one of your teachers.
