Why do people say Sadhu, Sadhu, Sadhu?

Post by SarathW »

Why do people say Sadhu, Sadhu, Sadhu?

Another Sri Lankan prodigy (sixteen years old now). He says making a loud sound by shouting Sadhu is an unwholesome action.
He said we should familiarise ourselves with the Sadhu Sutta.
I found the following link on the net.

Is there any other Sadhu Sutta?

The young boy in OP's video became a monk yesterday.
His first Dhamma sermon is given below just for the record.
His teaching and Dhamma analysis are based on ven. Wharaka Abhayaratnalankara.
I am not sure how Ven. Abhayaratnalankara came up with his ideas.
I was fascinated with the meaning he has given to Sam (meaning attachment, aversion, and ignorance)
Sara means Sukkha in Sinhalease. So Samsara means taking attachment, aversion, and ignorance as Sukha.
Surprisingly this application of Sam in this way makes a lot of sense in other applications as well.
Did he learn that from his teacher? What is the basis for his teaching?

Any explanation that is different from the Pali Tipitaka and Atthakatha should be considered carefully before accept or reject.

I generally do not like it when they ordain children.
However in this case this young man had a lot of Sutta knowledge before he became a monk.
I think young children should be educated in Buddhism before they ordain as monks.
Most of the time these young children are neglected by parents or they can't afford to feed them.

It can mean: gratitude

But, just use 1 time or 2 times NOT 3 TIMES.

Sādhu, sādhu. :anjali:

Burmese jokingly & intentionally tend to say "Sadhu" only twice to appreciate someone's (who is habitually found to be not very reliable) apparent good behaviors; the third one is left in reserve depending upon how persistent those good behaviors will be. [Not in serious manner, of course]

Thats wrong.
If sentences u can saying 3 times.

Sādhu is a "word". The Buddhå just
Using 2 times, not three.

All country, all world say 2 times too
For a "word". For sentences u can say
3 times like:
Namo tassa Bhagavatå Arahatå Sammāsambudhassa
(3x)
Bahagia Tidak Harus Selalu Bersama

Interesting.
So in your opinion, they have to say Sadhu only twice.

You might want to qualify that with: you've travelled to all Buddhist societies, temples, monasteries around the world and no one says sadhu 3 times. Just one counter example is sufficient to falsify your claim. Youtube Ajahn Brahm talks, he famously do 3 Mega Sadhus at the end.

In all my encounters in Theravada Buddhism in Malaysia and Singapore, we use 3 Sadhus if we do it. So, don't over generalise what's from your own temple/ tradition/ country.
