Basically many monks and the present government are not supporting this act.
The government attorney representing the president warns that this act will give the powers to laypeople (or even non-Buddhist) to decide about the fate of Tipitaka. It appears Kiribathgoda Nananada has some interest in this initiative even though he is directly not present in the debate. At face value, this initiative expects to stop monks such as Waharaka linage and the people who are claiming that the Buddha was born in Sri Lanka. However, the majority of monks believe there is a hidden agenda to dilute the present government protection for Buddhism.

:thanks:

Oops! the issue is already complicated enough even without the Buddha having to be born in Sri Lanka.

The interesting thing that I learn now is they are trying to protect the Sinhalese translation of Tipitaka (Buddha Jayanti Tipitaka which contains some mistakes too), not the Pali Tipitaka.

Sri Lanka govt should not interfere with buddhist especially when their govt is involved in severe human rights violation... Japan should preserve buddhism

Well, Japan isn't a good candidate either, given that the dark past history of the country and its people's distorted mindset, full of vanity, delusion and lust.

Actually, no country has the right to dictate sacred scriptures of Buddhism.

Preserve, yes; dictate, no.

Tripitaka Conservation Bill - BMICH Conference - PART - 2

A recording of a conference held at the Bandaranaike International Conference Hall on August 5-7, 2021 to discuss the proposed Tripitaka Conservation Bill. This is the recording of the first half of the 5th day.

There was a scholarly discussion and the Venerable monks and lay scholars were present to present their views. There have been exchanges for and against the bill.

After considering all the issues raised, the Presiding Council has decided that due to this Act, the final decision regarding the Tripitaka will be vested in a civil court which is unfavorable to the Sasana and new scholars will be appointed to discuss and take appropriate action on the removal of matters which do not conform to the Dhamma Discipline. A committee has been appointed.
