Tsunami waves began rolling into Hawaii early Friday, with readings of between 6 and 8 feet expected in some areas following the giant earthquake that struck Japan.

Hmm, makes our little shake look rather mild... Marinas shaken up in California, and we even have (minor) Tsunami down here:

May the people of Japan be well...The very understanding that 'consciousness turns back from name-and-form and that it does not go beyond, is the saving-wisdom which amounts to a full comprehension of the illusion (Maayaa) that is consciousness. Between these two links of the Pa.ticca Samuppaada there is a vortex or a whirling-round for a designation of 'this-ness' (i.e., 'the conditions of this existence'). Now, a vortex or an eddy, is 'a current running back, contrary to the main stream, thus causing a circular motion,' and this Sa.msaaric vortex too is the outcome of defying the flux of nature with its three characteristics of impermanence (anicca), suffering (dukkha) and not-self (anattaa). ...

Heartbreaking. I hope the loss of life will be as minimal as possible, but I fear tens of thousands may already be gone. So sad.

I have a really bad feeling about the nuclear plant ...
The tsunami and earthquakes are nothing, if it comes to a nuclear meltdown.
Then the shit hits the fan.
Remember Chernobyl?

Metta to all the people and animals in Japan.
And this is a strong reminder that you never know when your time is up.
This life might be your very last chance to practice genuine Dhamma till the next Aeon.
This should bring some sense of urgency in our practice.
Metta.

News here says that a lot of people are still trapped in areas hit by the tsunamis. The emergency rescue people are concerned of another tsunami so they are cautious about going in with vehicles. Helicopters are doing evacuation but they don't have enough of them for all the areas hit.

It looks like the tsunami hasn't had much effect beyond the immediate vicinity of the quake: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011 ... 162313.htm.
Something to be thankful for amongst all the bad news.

I listen to the news for updates and my heart goes out to these people...
There are such contradictions though....
On the one hand we have reports of tragedy after tragedy, as we watch the planet wreak havoc with conditions brought about by.... what....? Global warming? Sun flares? The natural evolutionary progress of a fragile lump of earth orbiting a ball of flaming gas.....?
Earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, tornadoes, mudslides, tsunamis... all happening with alarming and increasing frequency...
On the other hand, we have unrest in the Middle East with the spotlight currently on Libya, where thousands are being beaten, tortured and killed through the wishes of an ageing despot delusionally clinging by his elderly fingernails to a hollow and archaic power.......
And in the midst of all this human suffering and chaos, some - arguably, most - of it caused by Human Ignorance - all we can do is sit, meditate, be calm and still, and wait as things roll inexorably on..
Metta to all beings.

One form of suffering is unavoidable.
The other is based on greed, hatred and delusion.
May all beings be free from physical and mental suffering.

Btw, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis are not increased by global warming.
Re: Science-Earthquake
Science has approved that what is the reason behind earthquake but no technology is in the world for exact earthquake's judgment.

Re: massive earthquake and tsunamis hit japan
That point shouldn't need making, Anna, but (sadly) most people don't seem to think about causes carefully enough to distinguish one kind of cataclysm from another.Annapurna wrote:Btw, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis are not increased by global warming.
There are all sorts of ways of categorising the disasters which have been affecting us in the last six months. "Whodunnit?" is one of them. Earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis are entirely natural; cyclones and floods are mostly natural, with a bit of a boost from mankind via increasing CO2 by over-consumption of fossil fuels; and riots and rebellions are all our own doing.
We still do more to harm ourselves than nature does to harm us. It would be nice if we learned not to, wouldn't it?
But we're slow learners.

What do you mean, Kim?
Need not be made?
Anyways...
I already knew yesterday in my deeply saddened heart that the situation at the reactor would.....escalate....
I will predict here and now more:
That one day, when we don't STOP with nuclear energy NOW, SOONEST, we won't only have a SUPERGAU meltdown that is polluting one continent only, but all of them.
The whole planet...
I know it.
It's breaking the heart to see it coming-

Re: massive earthquake and tsunamis hit japan
Hi Anna. The situation with the nuke reactors in Japan is indeed dangerous. And sooner or later there probably will be another major nuclear disaster, but earthquakes, tsunamis and wars seem to be the more common "mass" killers. Over 100,000 killed in Haiti last year, major quakes recently in New Zealand, Japan, China, Chile and Indonesia... These seem to be more common. There are many deaths that can be mourned and prayers given but i try not to think too much about disasters that haven't yet happened. It just stirs up fear and anxiety.
Remember the 2004 tsunami? Over 100,000 swept away at the same time...
