Meditation without timers
Re: Meditation without timers
I use my digital watch as a timer, but the problem I have with timers is that I get the urge to check how long its been/how long is left. Perhaps this will be overcome with continued practice.
May you be happy. May you be a peace. May you be free from suffering.

There are different types of joss sticks. With some made by lavenda, different fragrance and so on. And there's some that have special "feature" like less smokes it will produce. One small glowing stick won't harm anyone but the smokes from cars on highways do, harm someone.

I use Zen Timer for my iPhone, which I'm extremely happy with. It's extremely customizable and the sounds are very pleasant.

Why I'm responding though, is because of all the people saying that they often tempted to watch the clock. What I do is set the timer, and then toss it too far for me to see without getting up. Fixes that problem for me pretty nicely.

Re: Meditation without timers
The site below has some nice timers that are simple mp3 files. You can play them on your computer, burn them to a CD, or whatever you want to do with them. It is just a simple bell, then dead silence for a given amount of time, then more bells to let you know when time is up. The 5 minute timer is free, the others are $0.99 each.

Re: Meditation without timers
The 'gymboss' timer (about 20 bucks on amazon, a dollar or 2 less from their site) is the only one that I have found that offers a simple 'ding' (well, and electronic buzz really) that you do not have to turn off. I have used mine for a couple years now, and I love it. as the batteries get lower (it's taken about 2 years, never turning it off, for this to happen), the sound gets a little quieter, which is also nice.
Re: Meditation without timers
Hello:
I find its extremely easy to know how much time have passed during meditation,
so i only use a clock when i sense my practice its becoming weaker or when i have an appointment.
Much Metta.

I'm impressed. I find that time really drags when things aren't going well, and time flies when they are.2600htz wrote:I find its extremely easy to know how much time have passed during meditation,

Time perception goes a beyond that.
If u know u have an appointment the next day in the morning,
many times u will wake up by yourself just a few minutes before the ring.
How is that? Time inside the dream pass even faster....
Re: Meditation without timers
Hey all,
Been a while since I viewed this thread. I now have a cell phone with internet that can also download and play web content, so I've downloaded a couple bell timers from the Gil Fronsdal site (http://www.insightmeditationcenter.org/ ... on-timers/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). They work great. I tried the site that allows you to make your own mp3 timers (http://www.yourmeditationtimer.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), and it works just fine, but I like the sound of the bells on the Fronsdal site - soft, smooth, prolonged sound that slowly fades. Much more pleasant than an alarm clock, especially when I start to fall asleep, haha.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm appalled at how expensive meditation timer devices can be when purchased online. Anything over twenty bucks is ridiculous if you ask me

Re: Meditation without timers
?
I am the original poster. I started the thread to get advice on how to meditate w/o a timer, but I actually ended up getting advice encouraging me to find something to use as a timer, which was great advice because I'm no good at sitting without a timer. I would most likely stop too early.
I now have a timer. And I'm going to use it.?
