Mindfulness and Justice: Planting the Seeds of a More Compassionate Future
Edwin Ng
ABC RELIGION AND ETHICS 29 JUN 2015

During the Dalai Lama's recent visit, he underscored yet again the message he has been sharing around the world: we need to plant the seeds of a more compassionate future by cultivating loving kindness with a peaceful mind.

With the widespread adoption of mindfulness across multiple domains of public and private life - from mindful trading to mindful learning to mindful parenting to, yes, even mindful sex - all sorts of promises about mental, physical and emotional wellbeing are being made today in the name of mindfulness.

But to what extent are these developments fostering the ethos of engagement which the Dalai Lama repeatedly urges for a more caring, inclusive and pluralistic world? Are we in fact using mindfulness to plant the seeds for a more compassionate future?

“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”
- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

but great rivers flow silently.
