Apparently Economists agree that US would have been better pursuing IP protection rather than specific dollar trade amounts since there is just not a high demand for US goods in China.

US economic dominance has historically often been maintained by mafia thuggery; such as the elite US families involved in the Opium Wars; a trade that has continued to US control of Afghan opium today. Most, maybe all, of the regime change activities, were for economic agendas, such as 1953 Iranian coup d'état, 1954 Guatemalan coup d'état; 1973 Chilean coup d'état; or the establishment of the Petrodollar (devised by Kissinger, Sonnenfeldt, Parsky, Simon, etc) that resulted from a crisis where the US refused to return French owned gold. There are the conspiracy theories the Iraq & Libya regime change were influenced by the threats of those countries to stop using the Petrodollar. Trump's thuggish behaviour towards China is not exactly subtle or covert. Its not "the art of the deal" but the art of threat. Often, Trump says if other countries follow his wishes he will provide (mafia style) "protection".

That part which does address the U.S. and China is based on what exactly? What is true (even though CNN reported it) is that Trump is the first "foreign leader to have an official dinner in the [Imperial] palace since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949." It's a rare honour, unlikely to be bestowed upon someone who is doing what you infer Trump is doing.

Based on principles of free-enterprise rather than coercion. The Pali suttas do not criticize showing a flair for business enterprise but I do not recall the Pali suttas support bullying. Dhamma teaches kamma rather than entitlement. If Trump wants to make America great again, it should be done with sound economic policy (rather than with lies threats, war, trade sanctions, unsustainable tax cuts, etc). I think if Trump & his Goldman Sach advisors understood economics & Buddhist morality, they would not have made their personal billions from predatory lending, gambling, rental ghettos, beauty contests (porn), etc.
