Where did the Buddha advise to become a monk ?

Post by thang »

There are many places in the Suttas in which the disadvantages of the lay life and the advantages of the monk life are mentioned.
Are there any other Suttas like below where there are direct advices?
[Khaggavisana Sutta: A Rhinoceros]

Cutting off the householder's marks,
like a kovilara tree
that has shed its leaves,
the prudent one, cutting all household ties,
wander alone
like a rhinoceros.

Abandoning offspring, spouse,
father, mother,
riches, grain, relatives,
& sensual pleasures
altogether,
wander alone
like a rhinoceros.

"This is a bondage, a baited hook.
There's little happiness here,
next to no satisfaction,
all the more suffering & pain."
Knowing this, circumspect,
wander alone
like a rhinoceros.

I meant advising directly like 'do it' instead saying 'having seen the obstacles of lay life one becomes a monk' or mentioning the disadvantages of the lay life. (I edited the topic)

I understand your title from the start. I am just saying Rhino Sutta is not words directly from the Buddha.

So who modern scholars believe it to be from ?

It was believed to be from Paccheka Buddha, recited by the Buddha when in a Trance. I was told by a very respectable Theravada Monk.

I remember I also heard something like that from some monks while some say it's not, but not sure what is the reason for that deduction and who is correct.
Nevertheless both opinions hold the view that it was said by a Buddha.

I think that was from commentaries. So we wont be sure. No matter what, rhino is my favourite sutta.
