I once remembered there was a book that detailed a lot of the Buddha's teachings for a layman which was not like the Patimokkha but it was also very instructive about the Buddha's positions on the morals and good character required of people in lay life. I know of the Sigalovada sutta but that is only one reference to the Buddha's positions on lay life, and I remember the book including the Buddha's ideals on parenting, leadership, what makes a good teacher, what makes one good with finances etc.
Failing that I could use as many suttas that refer to good lay practice, and Pali that reflect the ideals of a good layman.

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

Perhaps the Upasakajanalankara. Or Ven. Dr. Saddhatissa's Buddhist Ethics, which is much informed by this text.Wizard in the Forest wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2019 10:09 pm I once remembered there was a book that detailed a lot of the Buddha's teachings for a layman which was not like the Patimokkha but it was also very instructive about the Buddha's positions on the morals and good character required of people in lay life.
