Looking for sutta re: giving different types of teachings according to personality of audience
Looking for sutta re: giving different types of teachings according to personality of audience
I remember a sutta where the Buddha lists I think 5 types of teachings to give & who to give/not give them to, something like "If I give a teaching on morality to someone unaccomplished in morality they will not receive it well", anyone know what it is?
Born, become, arisen – made, prepared, short-lived
Bonded by decay and death – a nest for sickness, perishable
Produced by seeking nutriment – not fit to take delight in
Departure from this is peaceful – beyond reasoning and enduring
Unborn, unarisen – free from sorrow and stain
Ceasing of all factors of suffering – stilling of all preparations is bliss
Bonded by decay and death – a nest for sickness, perishable
Produced by seeking nutriment – not fit to take delight in
Departure from this is peaceful – beyond reasoning and enduring
Unborn, unarisen – free from sorrow and stain
Ceasing of all factors of suffering – stilling of all preparations is bliss

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

Wow, Excellent sutta. It is just as the Buddha says, when an unfaithful person is explained about faith, he becomes angry and looses his temper.
The Tathagatha indeed is very wise and all seeing!

Yes this is a great sutta
“Knowing that this body is just like foam,
understanding it has the nature of a mirage,
cutting off Māra’s flower-tipped arrows,
one should go beyond the King of Death’s sight.”

INdeed that is a great sutta.
What do you think it means? Do you think it is just teaching about what topics to choose or avoid when talking to different kinds of people?.....or do you think it is saying something about each of those different kinds of people?....or do you think it is about some common trait that all of those different kinds of people have in common?....or do you think it is saying something else?.....
