Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?
Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?
Isn't this just another example of something we know is wrong that we are only talking about for fun? Because that seems to happen a lot here.
Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?
Bhante Yuttadhammo rejects the four noble truths because he says jhanas are not necessary since he thinks "dry insight" is sufficient all the way to Arahantship, a concept not found in the suttas.. I wouldn't consider him an authority on Buddhism.rhinoceroshorn wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 6:32 pm People defending piracy!!!!
They certainly must be noobs, beginners, unvirtuous!!!!
Just watch Bhante Yuttadhamma (who is btw very knowledgeable) defending publicly piracy: https://buddhism.stackexchange.com/ques ... /2869#2869
He certainly must be contributing to the fall of the Sassana!!!!11

I also disagree about that but it doesn't mean he is wrong about everything else.coconut wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 7:19 pmBhante Yuttadhammo rejects the four noble truths because he says jhanas are not necessary since he thinks "dry insight" is sufficient all the way to Arahantship, a concept not found in the suttas.. I often disagree with you and Ceisiwr and not for that I discard everything you two post because of x or y points.
Eyes downcast, not footloose,
senses guarded, with protected mind,
not oozing — not burning — with lust,
wander alone

See, Ānanda! All those conditioned phenomena have passed, ceased, and perished. So impermanent are conditions, so unstable are conditions, so unreliable are conditions. This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.

Well you said he's very knowledgeable, but how can a knowledgeable person disregard the most crucial critical teaching of the Buddha: the four noble truths.rhinoceroshorn wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 7:23 pmI also disagree about that but it doesn't mean he is wrong about everything else.coconut wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 7:19 pmBhante Yuttadhammo rejects the four noble truths because he says jhanas are not necessary since he thinks "dry insight" is sufficient all the way to Arahantship, a concept not found in the suttas.. There were monks misbehaving even at the time of the Lord Buddha, nowadays their number is probably much higher.
Just because someone is known to bears the status of a monk, does not means that he complies with the Buddha-Dhamma.
In just a small search, I found this one: https://coconuts.co/yangon/news/buddhis ... ghs-video/
There is a sutta where the Lord Buddha gives a brief guideline to assess what is in line with the Dhamma and what is not: https://www.dhammatalks.org/suttas/AN/AN8_53.html
Your practice goes as far as your virtue goes. This sutta stress the huge importance that a virtuous conduct (by thoughts, speech and bodily deeds) plays in the practice: https://www.dhammatalks.org/suttas/AN/AN11_2.html

Do you think there is a moral basis for the concept of intellectual property?DaniloSS wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 8:33 pm

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?
Just a detail: I don't know if the Venerable explicitly defends piracy like me.
A more accurate description in order not to misrepresent him is saying that he doesn't speak against/in dispraise of piracy. Just that.

Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?
When Buddha started teaching he only had a few rules. Decades later he needed over two hundred rules for monks. By now he would need at least two thousand rules for monks.
Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?
I studied graphic design the software is from adobe company which is very expensive, and they asked us as students to use pirate software from the begining. If i were to know that i had to use those expensive programs i would not enter this career. I remember i told to my father that i wanted to quit but he did not let me. Then after graduating and being very poor i contemplated why i was so poor. Then i remembered that i was using pirate software. And from then on i had been abstaining from doing so. I am saving money to being able to buy a new computer with legal software. Piracy is against the law and is also bad kamma. Also interestingtly i had noted poverty in all those that use pirate software from architechts to graphic designers. I had noted that sometimes the client doesnt want to pay them, and this might be for some reason.
Re: Does illegal downloading violate the 2nd precept?
If you or anyone else thinks that downloading something from the internet is a violation of the 2nd precept the by all means DO NOT DO IT.....because if you do it you will be intentionally violating the 2nd precept. It makes no difference whether it is legal or illegal...either way you would be intentionally violating the 2nd precept.

Right View (samma ditthi) is the worldview by which the Lord Buddha's followers base their actions and the view that "there is what is given, what is offered, what is sacrificed" is included in it. So, under Right View, whatever service or product (tangible or not) which is the fruit of someone else's effort, time and skill is to be regarded as their property. To say the opposite is wrong speech born from wrong view.
