Re: Money with jhana
Actually, I find it to be the opposite. You need a lot of money for instruction, books, retreats, travel to retreats, missing work. It is much worse in Mahayana. You really have to be well off to be in Vajrayana. At least with the Theravada the important thing is to be somewhere by yourself doing something with what you have already learned.Nobodyisspecial wrote: ↑Sun May 09, 2021 2:28 am Does anyone else find jhana absorbtion not possible with a large bank account?
Re: Money with jhana
There are no monetary costs associated with learning and practicing Mahāyāna Buddhism. If you want to buy books, buy books, but Mahāyāna Buddhism is learned from those who have renounced money. Donation is a great activity that needs to be optional, otherwise it is a fee. If someone is charging exorbitant fees for retreats and personalized teaching, that is a bad sign.
What is the Uncreated?
Sublime & free, what is that obscured Eternity?
It is the Undying, the Bright, the Isle.
It is an Ocean, a Secret: Reality.
Both life and oblivion, it is Nirvāṇa.

I don't believe that having a big bank account should be an obstacle to meditation. It is more likely the case that you have made it an obstacle and therefore it has become one. If you didn't have money it would be a different kind of obstacle. Just let go of the fixation, it's just conceptual and not real.

But oh, by the way, if you really want to unload some cash I'm always here for you...

It's not the size of the balance, but the strength of the attachment that counts... These are usually in direct relation to each other, though.

You won't find that in the early parts of the Pāli canon. Only in later parts, when this legend had become widespread.confusedlayman wrote: ↑Wed May 26, 2021 4:58 pm He was prince as told by him... but it is not the topic of discussion
