Chakras are later development when tantra became popular. During the Buddha time there are just 4 colours. The 7 rainbow colours scheme was only created in 1927 by Leadbeater.
Concentrating on the colour and expanding the aura has been mentioned in some sutta featuring that arahant that is the best in divine eye. Likely to be linked to sphere of infinite space.
This style is also linked to the eight emancipation.
