The four gardian gods

[37] Bhikkhus, on the eighth day of the waxing moon, the ministers and members of the gathering of the four guardian gods wander about to see whether many humans care for mother, father, recluses, brahmins, elders in the family or observe the eight precepts on the full moon day and keep awake doing merit.

Bhikkhus, on the fourteenth day of the waxing moon, the sons of the four guardian gods wander about to see whether many humans care for mother, father, recluses, brahmins, elders in the family or observe the eight precepts on the full moon day and keep awake doing merit

Bhikkhus, on the full moon day the fifteenth day of the waxing moon, the four guardian gods themselves wander about to see whether many humans care for mother, father, recluses, brahmins, elders in the family or observe the eight precepts on the full moon day and keep awake doing merit.

Bhikkhus, if it be only a few humans that care for mother, father, recluses, brahmins, elders in the family or observe the eight precepts on the full moon day, at the assembly of the thirty-three gods in the Suddhamma hall the four guardian gods inform Sakka: 'Sirs, only a few care for mother, father, recluses, brahmins, elders in the family and a few observe the eight precepts on the full moon day and keep awake doing merit. Bhikkhus, hearing this the thirty-three gods become distressed thinking the celestial body is waning and the body of demons is waxing

May you have many merits for this corner of the Internet :anjali:

What do you think about having a WhatsApp group reminding us of the Uposatha days? Sometimes my life is so Chaotic that a reminder on my phone the day before the event can help me remember...

Well maybe I'll start one. Perhaps it will keep me on top of things a bit more.

If anyone is interested in joining a WhatsApp group for Uposatha Observance please send me a private message with your mobile number (including the country code, or just tell me what country you are in if you are not sure) and I will add you to the group..

I intend to be following the NASA tradition.

First Quarter November 1

Full Moon November 8 IL Poya? (I don't know some places seem to say this is the 7th, some the 8th?) https://www.tourslanka.com/events-festi ... l-holiday/ The penultimate Full moon poya of the year...

Last Quarter November 16
New Moon November 23
First Quarter November 30

Am I doing the wrong thing not following a traditional menology?

Don't forget to message me if you are interested in a WhatsApp (or anything else? email? Viber? Skype? etc.) Uposatha reminder service...

Don't one, seeking for long term happiness, forget to observe the New Moon uposata today, maybe by honoring Venerable Moggolana, on his Parinibbana day today, trying to develop supra natural powers.

There's a nice page with explanations how to add the Uposatha/Observance days to either your Google Calender or iCal (Apple):
https://forestsangha.org/community/cale ... nners/2022

You can then have all sorts of reminders and nice stuff with your smartphone (can block certain apps on these days, etc)

Yes I agree perhaps it would be much better if a good, kind & pragmatic member of the Sangha who was keeping good precepts/vinaya etc. could run this group.. any offers? (As not everyone has a connection to Sangha nearby their Home)..

Or does such a reminder service exist already? I think it would be much better to have a Human element.. than be reminded by a Robot...

Hey

sorry for taking so long to answer

I think it's better to stay public in this thread..

but I think other people might like the idea of creating other groups..

For reminders on the phone it would be more useful to make a public google calendar, or some such, that could be imported (or just enter them yourself - it's not that many). Of course, bear in mind that the exact dates for the various groups in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, etc, are sometimes slightly different, see for example https://www.watmetta.org/news/Uposatha2022.pdf, and so if you want to attend something at a monastery, or some other group, make sure you know which calendar is being used!

Why don't all traditions abandon their traditions and follow the teachings of the Buddha directly i.e. the vinaya have poya days on the actual moon cycles and the Sangha become one Sangha again?
