For those of you trying to brainwash yourself into think Buddha was in four jhānas in that thunderstorm:

DN 16, MN 8 Buddha and Alara not hearing sounds from 500 carts and thunderstorm is 'peaceful dwelling', not 'four jhānas'

Anyone know of other suttas that shed light on whether peaceful dwellings can refer to anything other than formless attainments?
I don't even know of any easily searchable pali phrase to search for. Both DN 16 and MN 8 conjugated santa and vihara in various ways.

Can you explain how it sheds light on santa vihara?

hard to say. if the form jhanas and the formless attainments are way beyond our pay grade, imagine how much further the arahattaphalasamadhi is beyond our grasp!

It's not really well explained, santena or santa means "peaceful".

I can only find DN 18 and SN 21.3 mentioning it as a question.

Then MN 8 labels them as "Santā ete vihārā".

So based on MN 8 one of the formless attainments makes more sense...but it also makes more sense in context since formless attainments would be involving less sensory perception.
