Compilation of what guarantees arahantship or anāgāmi (non-return)

Post by SecretSage »

I've been trying to compile a list of things that guarantee arahantship here and now or if not anāgāmi (non-return) when developed and cultivated based on the Theravada suttas.

Here's what I've found so far that when developed guarantees arahantship or non-return (anāgāmi):
  • Four bases of iddhi (SN 51.25)
  • Four kinds of mindfulness meditation (DN 22)
  • The five faculties (faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom) (SN 48.65)
  • Mindfulness of breathing (SN 54.4)

Things that guarantee arahantship or anagami but only when the idea is combined with the seven awakening factors (mindfulness, investigation, energy, enthusiasm , tranquility, concentration. and equanimity) SN 46.57-SN 46.76:
  • A Skeleton
  • Worm-Infested
  • Livid
  • Split Open
  • Bloated
  • Loving-kindness
  • Compassion
  • Rejoicing
  • Equanimity
  • Breathing
  • Foulness
  • Death
  • Repulsiveness of Food
  • Dissatisfaction
  • Impermanence
  • Suffering in Impermanence
  • Not-Self in Suffering
  • Giving Up
  • Dispassion
  • Cessation

Things that guarantee non-return (anāgāmi) Iti 1-6:
  • Abandoning greed (lobha)
  • Abandoning hate (Dosa)
  • Abandoning delusion (Moha)
  • Abandoning anger (Kodha)
  • Abandoning disdain (Makkha)
  • Abandoning conceit (Māna)
Is there anything missed from this list?
