From what I understand both are precursors to jhanas and appear to be described the same ways.

Just as a bird, wherever it goes, flies with its wings as its only burden; so too is he content with a set of robes to provide for his body and almsfood to provide for his hunger. Wherever he goes, he takes only his barest necessities along. This is how a monk is content.(DN11)

I've always thought of upacara samadhi to be a precursor to jhanas in the process, whereas the "pleasant abiding" refers to the use the meditator might make of the experience. But that's just based on what I heard someone say, rather than looking at how the phrases are used.Dhammapardon wrote: ↑Mon May 29, 2023 6:02 am From what I understand both are precursors to jhanas and appear to be described the same ways.

I also heard that when you come out of Jhana too you have the Upacara Samadhi.
The way I understand that the Upacara Samadhi is a Jhana state and the pleasant abiding here and now is a Vipassana state.
I may be wrong.
