What does adding someone to the friend list do?

I understand that adding a member into the foe list causes his posts to be hidden. But what does adding someone to the friend list do?

Now you can add me as a friend and see what happens.

The only thing I've noticed is that it just makes it easier to send them a PM. Their name(s) appear on the box to the left in your private messages area and you can click on them to add them as a recipient to a message.
