X-Ray Satipatthana Meditation

Post by Quantum Foam »

Hi,

I'm looking for something that does a body scan in the style of Bhikkhu Analayo but is more specific and addresses all the physical objects mentioned in the Satipatthana Sutta from head to toe e.g. in this order:

Hair - Enclosed by skin, flesh, tendons and bones

Tears, nasal mucus, saliva - Enclosed by skin, flesh, tendons and bones

Lungs, Intestines, Stomach - Covered by skin, flesh, tendons and bones

Fingers and toenails - Encased in skin, flesh, tendons, bones

Feces, urine, blood - encased in skin, flesh, tendons and bones

And then again from feet to head. Is there someone who teaches something like that, or who goes into more detail about such a mediation that "scans" the whole body with all organs etc. in a 30-minute meditation? With Bhikkhu Analayo it is always skin, flesh and bones.

Thanks.

How about doing the 31 body parts in the exact order the Buddha asked his monks to memorize them in?

MN 62 is a great way to go, because not only are you visualizing those 31 parts in order, but it guides you on how to do the proper reflection with respect to those body parts

From MN 62, the buddha's order was to group in in terms of earth property, then water property.

Wow, to be honest I'm a bit shocked by the pictures! But it must be so to see the true nature of the body. But now I'm wondering two things:

1. Is it even advisable for a laymen to practice this practice daily? Isn't that dangerous and you could quickly get into a kind of depression / feeling of being trapped in this piece of matter. Well the mind is also a prison...so it could lead to suicidal tendencies?

(I usually practice 30 minutes a day - Open Awareness / Animmitta Samadhi) This practice I wanted to continue after focusing on the body because I am making good progress with it.

2. Do you think it should be done purely contemplatively, dryly counting down the components with a visualization? What I love about Analayos Method is that he leaves the mindfulness of the body in the body scan, that you maintain a Bhava or Samadhi state associated with the Satipatthana...

Thank you very much!

1. safety first! If it's making you feel depressed then don't do it.
2. the main point of doing asubha, 31 body parts, is to loosen and eventually eradicate wrong views we have about the body being beautiful, worthy of all of our attention and energy, especially with lustful intent towards the opposite sex.
If your lust and attachment to the body are decreasing from doing this practice, then you're heading the right direction. If not, best to consult with a qualified teacher.

There's some great advice here:
