This film of approximately 1 hour follows the 1000's of hippies who traveled the world in the early 1970's "looking for something". It is the story of those seekers that discovered India, S.N. Goenka and the priceless gift of Dhamma. It is also the story of a remarkable man who brought Vipassana meditation to the world.

A well-made documentary. I shared it with a couple of my supporters who have attended 10-day courses at Dhammadīpa.
It was a nice reminder of my first vipassanā teachers: John Coleman and Mrs Ruth Denison, and of my brief stay at Oak Tree House.

- Dear friends,
After many years in the making, Mangala films is pleased to invite you to the Online Premiere of Part 2 on October 24th and 25th in the documentary film series:
From Myanmar to the World:
Part 2 - Caves to Pagodas
Film description:
Long ago, after receiving guidance from the Buddha, meditators would withdraw to practice in the solitude of a forest or a cave. Fast forward to the 1950s, when Burmese meditation master Sayagyi U Ba Khin was planning his ideal meditation center in Yangon. Inspired by some ancient structures in India, he chose a design featuring concentric rings of meditation “caves,” sheltered under the soaring structure of a golden Burmese zedi, or pagoda. This is the story of how Sayagyi U Ba Khin’s design was re-created first in India by his disciple, S.N. Goenka, and decades later in locations all over the world. For a meditation tradition that claims to have nothing to do with organized religion, some questioned the seemingly religious architecture. But are the pagodas merely decorative, or is there a practical function, something meditators can actually experience and benefit from?

Very nice video.

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

Very nice.
The creation of many meditation cells in one structure is sensible. When the structure is cells arranged in expanding concentric circles the structure acts like a natural vibration amplifier and the closer one is to the centre the more noticeable the vibrations.

A funny thing tho is the hardest part seems persuading the Calif officials to just actually read the strange floor-plan documents which had been reactively rejected for a year without seriously being inspected, due to alieness of the design, lol.
Among what I love from this documentary are, to my understanding:
Among what I love from this documentary are, to my understanding:
- taking refuge in three gems
- pagoda are more than just a monument, a memorial, or a place to sit inside; they are conducive for the path
- these pagodas are where people can practice alone, together; feel safe alone, together
- twelve links of DO explained by Goenkaji on the fifth day, making all that student had learned in University become suddenly meaningful

Thanks for the Day 5 talk. Awesome explanation of noble truths, and DO in two models.
What I have not expected is that a very strict retreat, practicing serious noble silence, could be that much overwhelmed with laughters thanks to light-hearted explanations by Goenkaji. Just listened to the talk, and my impression is that his teachings here are unbelievably classical when compared to portrayals of his approach by some others, imo.
