Some things in Buddhism are so basic that I think they are universally understood by most, like Dependant Origination. One does not even have to exist or not exist, cessate or enter Nibbana or continue on with polluted Skandhas for Dependant Origination to take place, it is a phenomena that is ever-present in the nomenal world. And with regards to Arhatship, just listen to the Buddha:

"Conditions truly they are transient
With the nature to arise and cease
Having arisen, then they pass away
Their calming, cessation is happiness."

Maybe, but for something so basic and universally understood, it certainly generates a lot of strenuously and even viciously defended versions of what it means.

Ananda: "It's amazing, lord, it's astounding, how deep this dependent co-arising is, and how deep its appearance, and yet to me it seems as clear as clear can be."

The Buddha: "Don't say that, Ananda. Don't say that. Deep is this dependent co-arising, and deep its appearance. It's because of not understanding and not penetrating this Dhamma that this generation is like a tangled skein, a knotted ball of string, like matted rushes and reeds, and does not go beyond transmigration, beyond the planes of deprivation, woe, and bad destinations.

Understanding the meaning behind the purpose of the Buddha's explanation of things as Dependently Arising and Co-arising as well as understanding the purpose in Buddha's mission in the Saha World brings one one step closer to Buddhahood.
