5 foods to avoid by Dr. David Sinclair

Post by DNS »

Excellent video (in my opinion) by Professor David A. Sinclair, Ph.D. on the five foods to avoid. In this video he also discusses the best foods to eat, best supplements to take for longevity. And he does not sell any supplements or products, so it's not a sales pitch of any kind.

He also discusses the benefits of one meal a day, intermittent fasting (from about 1:30 to 4:30) and longevity.

His ideas are compatible with Dhamma, including one meal a day and no alcohol.

TLDW summary:

Keys to good health & longevity:

Exercise and meditation; vigorous exercise about 3x per week, where you get out of breath;
Intermittent fasting; at least 16 hours of fasting, eating all meals within an 8 hour period to eventually going to one meal a day.

Supplements:

Resveratrol; provides the same benefits to the heart as red wine, without the alcohol;
NMN; a vitamin b3 which produces NAD;
Metformin; a diabetic drug that lowers blood sugar;

Metformin is the controversial one (consult your physician before taking), since it's not over-the-counter. He recommends it even if one is not diabetic (in small doses). He said blood sugar level is one of the biggest indicators of how long one will live, as most have elevated to very high blood sugar levels (even those who are not type 1 or type 2 diabetics).

Some good foods to eat:

Green leafy vegetables, especially spinach
Colorful vegetables; red, yellow, green
Fruits
Tofu, nuts
Fish (for those not ready to go vegan)

Foods to avoid:

Sugar
Bread
Meat
Dairy
Alcohol

I wouldn’t take metformin unless you have too. I currently take it. Gives you the shits lol

I heard celebrities and Silicon valley people are taking it, for the longevity claims.
In recent years, researchers have found that Metformin not only leads to weight loss but may also have other health benefits. It appears to slow down aging, improve lifespan, and delay chronic illness. The wonder drug may also lower the rate of cancer, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and vision loss.

I don't need it, so I just take a microdose amount, just in case there is any truth to the health and longevity benefits.

My weight is good, right at the ideal weight, but I have somewhat of a sweet-tooth. So I think the metformin helps with that. Recently though, I have been working on the sweet tooth and cutting back on sweets and added sugars. I take my coffee and tea black, no sugar, but sometimes consume vegan ice cream and some desserts when eating out. So now I'm trying to limit those.

Yes, OMAD (one meal a day) is excellent. When OMAD is followed, what is eaten actually becomes a bit less relevant.

Yes, I've noticed that too. If a meal is somewhat high-fat or sugary (natural + added sugars) and consumed before noon and one doesn't eat until 11 am the next day, the food has time to digest and for the body to recover. Then the type of food doesn't matter too much (up to a point).

I'm not a nutritionist or scientist, but have thought a good book title might be:

It's not what you eat, but when you eat (OMAD)

For health reasons, I followed a OMAD and keto diet quite strictly for a year, reverting pre-diabetic symptoms and also shedding some unneeded weight in the process.

On a OMAD diet, it becomes quite apparent, how high-sugar or high-carbohydrate meals cloud the mind for hours after -- at least in my case, surely a result of blood sugar spikes and throughs.

The additional clarity that was gained by cutting it out radically, the reduction in sloth and torpor, were amazing.

For those who have to grapple with an immense feeling of sloth and procrastination when meditating, as I still sometimes do, trying this as an experiment might be really helpful. Although at times I live quite a busy householder life, meditation practice (especially in longer sittings, eg. hours) improved within 15 days of starting it, so first results would not be that far off for anybody to give it a try.

I always loved Professor David A. Sinclair's recommendations and videos, including his insights on how certain lifestyle factors, such as diet and fasting, can influence the aging process. Along with his valuable advice, I've also come across a delightful sweet potato casserole recipe that complements a healthy diet.

Meat? I'll give GOOD advice to him, who
is the same age with me, "Choose fresh
meat, don't forget vegetables, and to be
perfect: fresh milk (dont drink milk every
day, except for babies)
