sutta location help

Post by salayatananirodha »

i frequently need help finding a sutta or vinaya passage, and i think instead of having these requests dispersed throughout various sub-forums it'd be best to have them all in one.

then, those who delight in finding these scriptures could go there directly and help lots of people. this would be a very practical improvement
16. 'In what has the world originated?' — so said the Yakkha Hemavata, — 'with what is the world intimate? by what is the world afflicted, after having grasped at what?' (167)

17. 'In six the world has originated, O Hemavata,' — so said Bhagavat, — 'with six it is intimate, by six the world is afflicted, after having grasped at six.' (168)

- sutta that says there are things hard to come by in the world, such as wealth and the woman treasure

- sangharakkhitattheravatthu dhammapadaṭṭhakathā , according to ñāṇananda this is a humorous anecdote relevant to what i was reading but when i google this term i don't find anything

I got that by searching the main page for this book. And yes, it's a great story.

Sādhu Nicolas and bkh

I’m also looking for sutta that compares two kinds of stream enterers, one who does not meditate and another who does. Or just showing how one stream enterer can be heedless and leave work left to be done

Also what does everyone in the forum think about this idea of creating a specific sub-forum for help finding suttas

Also I’m looking for the sutta that says one should first define pleasure (or happiness?) and then pursue that. Does anyone remember this

Personally, I exclusively read the forum through the "Active Topics" page, so putting them in a sub forum would have no benefit for me.

I believe that the only reason at this point to create new sub-forums would be if they were going to have specialized rules or would require specialized moderation. I don't really see either of those being relevant to requests for sutta identification.

What would be helpful (in my opinion) is if people would make good subjects for their posts requesting sutta ids. It would also be great if there were a way to change the subject of the post to "solved" once the id had been made. I don't know if PHPbb has a feature for that second thing or not.

Honestly I think sutta id help is probably the most valuable thing on this forum, I just don't see how putting them in a new sub forum would help.

I got that one with a simple search on SuttaCentral. The search is under construction, but appears to be improving each day.

Likewise, and I agree.

Actually this isn’t the one I was thinking of, the one I was thinking of actually told how these things were acquired

Could it be the Iṭṭha Sutta (AN 5.43)?

Yes I think so 🙏🏻
Now I’m looking for one that says that people think Buddha teaches specifically to them but that he speaks in a general way. It was somewhere in majjhima nikaya

“Aggivessana, I recall teaching the Dhamma to an assembly of many hundreds, and even then each person thinks of me: ‘The recluse Gotama is teaching the Dhamma especially for me.’ But it should not be so regarded; the Tathāgata teaches the Dhamma to others only to give them knowledge. When the talk is finished, Aggivessana, then I steady my mind internally, quieten it, bring it to singleness, and concentrate it on that same sign of concentration as before, in which I constantly abide.”

BTW, the SuttaCentral search has improved greatly. All I had to do was search for "each person" and it was the third result:
