Anapanasati

Post by befriend »

Are there any articles or an essay something succinct that explains how to do mindfulness of Inhalations and exhalations (not just rising falling of abdomen) with awareness of the 5 aggregates. Someone who teaches anapanasati but not just staying with the breath but being aware of sounds feelings thoughts etc..
Take care of mindfulness and mindfulness will take care of you.

Don't you think that Anapanasati Sutta gives a detailed method?

While not something succinct, you might wanna try Ven. Buddhadasa's very thorough analysis of Anapanasati here

Focusing on sounds would by definition not be anapanasati. The Buddha teaches how to do it sensitive to rapture and pleasure, focusing on the state of your mind while breathing, and on impermanence within the state of concentration generated.

I'd say that there are actually many teachers that teach something along these lines. For example, Mahasi's approach, and the numerous derivatives, involve paying attention to a grounding object (which could be motion of the abdomen, breath, walking, touch, etc) but, very importantly, to also to be aware of whatever else arises.

If you want something that specifically uses breath as in the Anapanasati sutta, my impression is that a lot of Sri Lankan teachers to adapted Mahasi's approach tend to use breath at the nostrils, rather than the abdomen, as the grounding object. For example Matara Sri Nanarama Mahathera, who was Abbot at Nissarana Vanaya while Ven Kaṭukurunde Ñāṇananda was there. You might check out his books - I think there are some available in English: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matara_Sr ... _Mahathera

One pointedness?

The introduction to anapana in this book

In these courses the technique you are talking about starts with the development of one pointedness : awareness of breath and the touch of the breath, in the area below the nostrils above the upper lip. This (developed) one pointed awareness can then extend to other sensations.
