A general question about uposatha practices, if I may.

If one refrains from sleeping in one's normal comfortable bed for one night, is that period of sleep the one before the full moon day, or the night after? For example, the full moon day is tomorrow, Wed 16th, when one maintains the eight precepts rather than the normal 5. Does one normally refrain from the high and luxurious bed tonight, awakening to keep the eight precepts? Or does one maintain the eight precepts, finishing this off with the less luxurious bed on the night of the 16th/17th?

One would observe the precept from dawn on the 16th until dawn on the 17th.

Many thanks, Bhante. :anjali:

Being a beginner in this (second month) I got this wrong and gave up the comfort of my normal bed last night. So I look forward to a second virtuous night on the camp bed tonight.

Bhante Dhammanando, for a layperson, what is the remedy for someone who has broken the uposatha precepts after he has taken them previously? Let say that if he were too hungry in the evening and couldn't resist having a meal (breaking the 6th) during the day he had taken the uposatha precepts, but later regretted about it, felt remorseful, so out of the dukkha he felt for breaking the precepts, he watched TV to forget about it (breaking further and further precepts, well, as the way it goes downhill from there), etc...So what is the remedy for this case? I humbly ask Venerable Bhante for guidance. Sadhu.

He may strengthen his motivation to observe the Uposatha precepts by reading and regularly re-reading the various Anguttara Nikaya suttas that outline the advantages in doing so.

When tempted to break a precept he may resist the temptation by resort to the three ādhipateyyas ("authorities", "predominances", "bases of self-governance").

https://suttacentral.net/an3.40/en/bodhi

But if he's such a deep-dyed akratic that the ādhipateyyas don't work for him, then he may seek out more enkratic Buddhist friends with whom to spend the Uposatha, rather than spending it alone.

Thank you Venerable Bhante for your kind reply and wise counsel, I very much appreciated. As the Buddha said, the whole of the practice is with kalyanamittas. I hope to find and meet such a person oneday.
If you happen to be in a wood dense with ancient trees of unusual height, where interlocking branches exclude the light of day, the loftiness and seclusion of that forest spot, the wonder of finding above ground such a deep, unbroken shade, will convince you that divinity is there. If you behold some deeply eroded cavern, some vast chamber not made with hands but hollowed out by natural causes at the very roots of the mountain, it will impress upon your mind an intimation of religious awe. We venerate the sources of great rivers; we situate an altar wherever a rushing stream bursts suddenly from hiding; thermal springs are the site of ritual observance; and more than one lake has been held sacred for its darkness or its measureless depth. So if you see a person undismayed by peril and untouched by desire, one cheerful in adversity and calm in the face of storms, someone who rises above all humankind and meets the gods at their own level, will you not be overcome with reverence before him?
Words of spiritual friends,
Like warm spring sunlight,
Gives rise to all wholesome dhammas.

Words of spiritual friends,
Like the full moon bright,
Cools and refreshes everything it shines.

Words of spiritual friends,
Like snowy summer mountain heights,
Dispels the heat and thirst of all the beasts.

Words of spiritual friends,
Like sunshine on a fragrant pool,
Opens all lotus flowers of the mind's goodness.
