Re: Pics or drawing of Buddha and his disciples in Theravada tradition
Having spent 3 months of Rainy season period in the Tavatimsa Heaven, the Sammasambuddha returned to human realm accompanied by hosts of deities, flanked by Brahma Sahampati and Sakka Devaraja.
The Lokavidu, having descending to human realm, exercising His unsurpassed Iddhi Power to reveal the heavenly realms and woeful hell realms, together with human realm. At that moment, Devas, humans, hell beings all can see each other as if face to face. Thus inspiring all of them establishing confidence in Triple Gems. This incident was called "Devarohana".

After calling the mother earth as a witness to his virtues and merits, the Bodhisatta Siddattha Gotama conquers the Mara and his hosts, claiming the right to sit on Bodhi Pallanka.
Bodhisatta Gotama finally gained Enlightenment, thus becomes the Sammasambuddha.

Three important days in Theravada tradition.
1) Vesak Day (or also known as Buddha Day): Signifies the birth of Gotama prince, the Enlightenment, the Parinibbana of the Buddha.
2) Asalha Day (or also known as Dhamma Day): Signifies the First Sermon (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta) gave by the Buddha to five ascetics.
3) Magha Day (or also known as Sangha Day): Signifies the meeting of Buddha with his first batch of 1250 Arahant monks.

Re: Random pics or drawing of Lord Buddha and his disciples in Theravada tradition
I’ve never been one for these idealistic forms. I prefer a more realistic representation, but they are harder to come by. Buddha as an old man is even rarer, but something I would prefer.
“Knowing that this body is just like foam,
understanding it has the nature of a mirage,
cutting off Māra’s flower-tipped arrows,
one should go beyond the King of Death’s sight.”

Re: Random pics or drawing of Lord Buddha and his disciples in Theravada tradition
Venerable Sanghamitta Theri (princess of Asoka Kingdom, beloved daughter of Asoka Maharaja, later becomes a Great Arahant Theri) brought the sacred Bodhi tree sapling (originated from the Bodhi Tree where the Buddha attained Enlightenment) to Lankadipa.
There she established the Bhikkhuni Sangha. Many women became nuns under her guidance.

Re: Random pics or drawing of Lord Buddha and his disciples in Theravada tradition
The Arrival of Arahant Mahinda (prince of Asoka King, elder brother of Arahant Sanghamitta Theri) and his fellow companions (one of them is still a layman, but soon given ordination that very day since he reached the goal) to Sri Lanka. There, Arahant Mahinda preached Cūḷahatthipadopama Sutta to Lanka King Devanampiya Tissa. The King was greatly inspired and have firm confidence in Triple Gems. He became a devout follower of Buddha Dhamma and established the first Buddhist monastery in Lankadipa, namely, Mahavihara.

King Devanampiya Tissa was chasing a wild deer (disguised by a Deva) in the forest, there later he encountered Arahant Mahinda and others.
But Arahant Mahinda, wishing not to make the King afraid (as the King was all alone, he will afraid if suddenly he sees several men, thinking that those men might harm him), there he exercising his Iddhi power, causing King Devanampiya Tissa only able to see Arahant Mahinda, but not the others.
King Devanampiya Tissa abandoned his hunting game, went to pay homage to Arahant Mahinda Thera.
King Devanampiya Tissa listened attentively to the Great Thera's preaching on Cūḷahatthipadopama Sutta.

The mother earth, i.e. the images of Phra Mae Thorani are common in shrines and Buddhist temples of Thailand (and also Laos, Burma, Cambodia). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phra_Mae_Thorani
Do you know why?
