“The soul is constantly suffering

One evil leaves, the other comes, one problem is solved, another appears.

On the other hand, the soul suffers internally from the passions and conflicts, which create regrets …”

You wouldn't, and I'd think such speculation as with most speculation is not skillful.
Pronouns (no self / not self)
“Peace is within oneself to be found in the same place as agitation and suffering. It is not found in a forest or on a hilltop, nor is it given by a teacher. Where you experience suffering, you can also find freedom from suffering. Trying to run away from suffering is actually to run toward it.”

I believe the Buddha cautioned against such speculation

There are no soulmates, because there are no souls.

However, there are couples who are very close, like best friends who mutually care for each other and might have similar kamma-vipaka where they would have similar experiences in samsara. I think Ven. Dhammika wrote about that in one of his articles, but can't find it right now. I did find this one:

Merriam Webster wrote: Definition of soul mate

1 : a person who is perfectly suited to another in temperament
2 : a person who strongly resembles another in attitudes or beliefs
Obviously the judgement "soul mate" refers to the present based on what can be observed at present. Why the speculation "past life"? If someone is my soul mate at present she/he is rightly called my "soul mate".

They may be rightly called that, but they are not necessarily called a "soul mate from past lives", which is what the question is about.

A soul mate is someone who knows you

Yet just met you

You care for some unknown reason

That concern is pain

Your mother and mother in law text you once a year to remind you. Gives you time to zip out to garden and cut a bouquet for your better half.

If you think about Siddartha and Yashodara, I think their bond was strong in previous lives as well. Buddha mentioned this reciting several Jathaka stories.

Everyone has been a close relative sometime in beginningless past lives in saṁsāra.
The Buddha transl. Thanissaro wrote:
Near Sāvatthī. There the Blessed One said: “From an inconceivable beginning comes the wandering-on. A beginning point is not discernible, though beings hindered by ignorance and fettered by craving are transmigrating & wandering on. A being who has not been your mother at one time in the past is not easy to find.… A being who has not been your father.… your brother.… your sister.… your son.… your daughter at one time in the past is not easy to find.

“Why is that? From an inconceivable beginning comes the wandering-on. A beginning point is not discernible, though beings hindered by ignorance and fettered by craving are transmigrating & wandering on. Long have you thus experienced stress, experienced pain, experienced loss, swelling the cemeteries—enough to become disenchanted with all fabricated things, enough to become dispassionate, enough to be released.”

From: Saṁyutta Nikāya 15:14-19 Mātu Sutta: Mother, translated from the Pāli by Thānissaro Bhikkhu

Some astrologers claim that there are astrological signatures characteristic of soul-mates, such as Venus-Pluto conjunction in synastry.
Rakkhantu sabba-devatā.
May all the devas protect you.
