well technically, the citizens/laity are still supporting that free health care with their labor via taxes and it's typical for more than half of what you earn to be taken by the government for such "free" services. Nothing is ever free in life :).

As far as Vinaya, monks at the time of the Buddha had the best health care of the day, so much so that people wanted to become monks just for health care for their ailments, which is why people with so many ailments are banned from being monastics today.

If the laity who run the money side of the monastery want donations to go to an insurance policy for monastic residents, then that happens, its fairly typical for well off places.

otherwise monastics , in America at least, can apply for Medicaid, free limited health care.

Oh, I never said it was free! I said it was universal. If you like to use the word free then you can say "free at the time of service" which I believe is the popular term in the UK.

Also, only a portion of the taxes go to universal healthcare. And not everyone is paying half of their salary in taxes, so that's not a great argument.

And in that system none of it goes into the pockets of insurance companies. Any way, we probably shouldn't move the subject away from health insurance for monastics.

Maybe at the state level. But if you are not seriously disabled (or a child), federal medicaid will not cover you. If you are just choosing not to work, as monastics do, medicaid is not an option. Unless things have changed recently.

Monks are not given to ask "apply" for medical care, they are living with the certain of sickness and death so to overcome it's cause. Such as insurances simply increase intoxication with health, life.

Certain, those using the holly life merely as a living, do all kinds of things equal householder, store and exchange, from amazon customer to paypal-accounts. Yet the way of living and livelihood distinguishes that of a householder and that of one gone forth.

While the second is of course a great field of merits, should one have the rare occasion and required wisdom to help maintaining such a body.

It's a matter of fading faith within the Parisa that ways turn from the conduct of Noble to the most trusted conduct of common and Marx. Poor they are, and not at all healthy and steady helped by the Devas near and sublime.
