my uposatha today failed due to lack of mindfulness

Post by confusedlayman »

Today I kept uposatha but evening i went to buy pendrive and accidentally went to starbucks and ate choco crossant with coffee. even coffee is liquid but crossant is solid. I relasized that i am supposed to keep uposatha only after eating. In just 5 min my today uposatha is wasted. Its all due to lack of mindfullness as when we keep uposatha for one day but remaining 29 days we enjoy then habitually even on uposatha day we tend to break food habits if we are unmindful

mindfullness is cheif protector against breaking precepts or any uposatha. mindfullness means every second mindful.. small lapse might drag us down.

I will take uposatha again in future. I am right now working on fixing thoughts of ill will
I may be slow learner but im at least learning...

Me too! But regarding entertainments rather than food. Having just woken up, I automatically, as per a normal day, did a wordle puzzle with my morning coffee.

And then briefly looked at the news, although I normally refrain on uposatha days. It's a superb reminder of the force of habit, even when you have formally set up an intention. And a good reminder that feeling disappointed after a "failure" is not useful.

Fail, try again, repeat until enlightened!
Your uposatha was better than mine, which didn't happen at all. :jumping:

Please don't skip Uposatha :jedi: AN 10.46
"Then the Teacher, being sympathetic, and having compassion for the whole world,
said to me, “Come, monk!” That was my ordination.
Staying alone in the wilderness, meditating tirelessly,
I have completed what the Teacher taught, just as the victor advised me.

In the first watch of the night, I recollected my past lives.
In the middle watch of the night, I purified my clairvoyance.
In the last watch of the night, I shattered the mass of darkness."

Here are the calendar dates. Some clever geek has provided the dates as paper copy, and a google .Ical file too. So handy for my phone.

Normally when people want to observe the 8 precepts on Uposatha day they'll spend much of the day in the monastery, it can be challenging to do it while going through your usual daily routine especially if you live with other people, just decide what's beneficial and what works for you.
Pronouns (no self / not self)
“Peace is within oneself to be found in the same place as agitation and suffering. It is not found in a forest or on a hilltop, nor is it given by a teacher. Where you experience suffering, you can also find freedom from suffering. Trying to run away from suffering is actually to run toward it.”
