Yanta ?

Post by figurehigh »

Hi,
I'm confused by a line in Snp 1.8 the Mettā sutta.

yanta santaṃ padaṃ abhisamecca

What is yanta in this context?
It appear to be vocative 'mechanism' but that makes no sense.

The rest reads, something like: 'having realized the path to peace'.

My guess would be it is a corruption of either:
yantaṃ = yaṃ + taṃ 'whoever'
or yantu ' let them proceed'

Any ideas?
Thanks

It's a shortened form of yaṃ tam, or "that which is". The yaṃ is pleonastic. It means "that peaceful state/path", but it's expressed as "that which is that peaceful state/path". It's quite a common construction in Pali.
