At one time the Buddha was staying at Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrel sanctuary. At that time Venerable Dabba the Mallian was assigning the dwellings and designating the meals, and the monks Mettiya and Bhūmajaka were newly ordained. They had little merit, getting inferior dwellings and meals. They then complained about Dabba to other monks, “Dabba the Mallian assigns dwellings and designates meals based on favoritism.”

The monks of few desires complained and criticized them, “How can the monks Mettiya and Bhūmajaka complain about Venerable Dabba to other monks?”… “Is it true, monks, that you do this?”

“It’s true, Sir.”

The Buddha rebuked them … “Foolish men, how can you do this? This will affect people’s confidence …” … “And, monks, this training rule should be recited like this:

Preliminary ruling
‘If a monk complains, he commits an offense entailing confession.’”

In this way the Buddha laid down this training rule for the monks.

As the Lord was going along the high-road between Rājagaha and Vesālī he saw several monks coming along smothered up in robes, having put a mattress of robes[1] on their heads and a mattress of robes on their backs and a mattress of robes on their hips, BD.4.410 and seeing (them) it occurred to the Lord: “These foolish men are turned too quickly to abundance of robes;[2] Vin.1.288 suppose I were to set a limit, were to establish bounds[3] as to robes for the monks?”

Some of the vinaya stories are also very sexual and graphic. Like the rule against getting a nun to wash a monk's robes. Too pornographic to repeat here!

Lord budda in Suttanipata 766 - 771; Kaamabsutta mentions kaama as pleasures and speaks that if one allows these pleasures as joy or delightful suffering will flow in him as water leaks in to a ship from a hole . Hence he requests to be mindful of wanting such pleasures as such pleasures are like the tip of a poisonous arrow. I hope his emphasis on avoiding such pleasures are meaningful . Especially to protect the sangha on an aryan path.

There's nothing outdated about an abode where you can disregard the signs and features of arisen phenomena, in order and cultivate sense restraint and jhana, without the obligation to attend to and partake of said signs and features.

Any institution to exist need a desciplinary code to exist properly and orderly . Lord budda laid such descipline when and where it was required and was laid with an objective .
There are 227 such vinaya rules identified as at vinaya pitaka . If a bikku breaks a vinaya they were given the opportunity to correct themselves . It is said that when little Rahula pointed to Seevali thero such a point he gratefully corrected himself . If at all vinaya rules are said to be obsolete they are with related to handling money or like driving vehicles . Not regarding morals or sanvara sila . A serious monk need not handle money or drive cars etc when there are many alternatives to replace them . An aryan bikku can always live within the vinaya pitaka . If any bikkhu wants to be off vinaya pit
aka then he cannot be a marga phala laabi bikku .
The objective of a bikku is to give up upadana or clinging from desires or tanha completely .

Couldn’t help but notice the similarity between the 24 Jain Tirthankaras when I read the description of the sutta.

You're joking? It was a bit hard to find an english copy at first. You can have mine but it's not in a very good condition. Lots of blurry parts in PDF format.
